After a major season update, I always give my D4 items and crafting materials a quick check before jumping into serious endgame farming. Forgotten Souls can disappear quickly when you start rerolling several pieces, and a patch can change how efficiently those materials are earned.

The same applies to D4 items that are waiting for upgrades, rerolls, or salvaging. A farming route that worked well before the update may not be the best choice anymore. Drop rates, reward bugs, crafting costs, and seasonal mechanics can all affect how quickly your Forgotten Soul supply grows.

Start With Whisper Cache Rewards

One of the first things worth checking is the Whisper system. Torment-level Whisper Caches have previously had problems with Forgotten Soul rewards, so I would not automatically assume everything is working exactly as expected after a large patch.

Complete a few Whisper activities and compare your Forgotten Soul total before and after opening the cache. If the material is being awarded correctly, you can continue using Whispers as part of your regular farming routine. If something seems wrong, it is better to notice early than spend hours farming an activity that is not giving the expected rewards.

Patch changes sometimes fix problems rather than introduce new ones, so older complaints from the community may no longer apply. That is another reason to test the activity yourself.

Take Another Look at Your Loot Filter

Your loot filter can quietly affect your Forgotten Soul income.

Ancestral equipment should not always be treated as worthless. Salvaging Ancestral items gives you a chance to obtain Forgotten Souls, while two-handed weapons can provide up to two Souls under the relevant salvage mechanics.

If your filter hides most Ancestral gear, consider adjusting it when Forgotten Souls become your main crafting bottleneck. You do not need to pick up every piece of equipment, but completely ignoring salvageable Ancestral items can remove a useful source of materials.

This is particularly noticeable during long dungeon sessions. Even when individual items seem unimportant, the salvage value adds up over time.

Check the Alchemist Before Converting Materials

The Alchemist is another stop I would make after a major economy change.

Look through the current material refinement recipes and compare them with your inventory. If you have plenty of Veiled Crystals but are struggling to maintain your Forgotten Soul supply, a conversion option may help balance your materials.

Still, do not convert everything immediately. Veiled Crystals are useful for other crafting activities, so spending a large reserve just to solve a short-term Forgotten Soul shortage can create another problem later.

The best approach is to look at your entire crafting inventory first. Then decide whether converting surplus materials actually improves your current situation.

Recheck Seasonal Farming Bonuses

Seasonal mechanics can make a much bigger difference than ordinary dungeon efficiency.

If the current season uses systems such as a War Plan or seasonal board, inspect the available nodes and modifiers before choosing your farming route. Activities involving Kurast Undercity or Lair Bosses can become more rewarding when the right modifiers are active.

Options such as Lure of Plenty, Golden Horde, and Gutter Filth can improve material-focused runs. The exact value depends on the current season and patch, so an old farming guide should not automatically be treated as the best answer.

Inspect Nightmare Dungeon Sigils

Nightmare Sigils deserve a quick review as well. A Sigil with the Horadric Materials Reserve affix can create additional opportunities to collect crafting materials through Horadric Chests.

When Forgotten Souls are your limiting resource, a material-focused dungeon can be more useful than one chosen purely for experience or speed. Check the Sigils already sitting in your inventory before spending resources on new ones.

This small habit can save time because you may already have several useful material runs available.

Compare Crafting Costs Before Spending

The final check is your actual crafting method. Repeatedly enchanting at the Occultist can consume Forgotten Souls surprisingly fast, especially when you are chasing one specific stat.

Before spending a large amount, compare the current costs of alternative crafting and transmutation options. If another route can accomplish the same upgrade for fewer resources, it may be worth using it instead of automatically going back to the Occultist.

Build Your Economy Around the Current Patch

After checking these systems, you should have a much clearer idea of whether your current farming routine still makes sense. If your stockpile is low, prioritize activities that provide reliable material rewards rather than simply following the fastest dungeon route from an older season.

If your crafting project cannot wait, some players may also consider services that let them buy d4 gear, but the important thing is to make that decision based on your actual material needs rather than panic-spending after a patch.

Spend Forgotten Souls More Carefully

A major update is a good reminder that D4's endgame economy is not completely static. Whisper rewards, salvage value, seasonal modifiers, material conversions, and crafting costs can all influence how quickly your resources disappear.

Once you verify these systems, you can return to farming with a better understanding of where your Forgotten Souls are coming from and where they are going.
